A Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health with over 37 years of rail experience, Russell has been 1st Inrail’s Head of HSQE since 2021, providing critical guidance, support and direction to all parts of the business.

A confident, outgoing individual with the ability to communicate with and support people at all levels, his considerable experience within the railway industry (including years of practical experience as a welder, COSS and foreman) gives him a great understanding of the working environment as well as the ability to prioritise, plan, co-ordinate and manage workloads efficiently and safely.

Key responsibilities

  • The management of the company’s RISQS accreditation and audits
  • The analysis of KPIs and preparation of HSQE documentation
  • Carrying out planned and ad hoc health and safety inspections
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, as well as the company’s various accreditations and management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001)
  • The continual monitoring of project and company-wide KPIs against overarching HSQE targets
  • Providing support to the firm’s operational teams and key business units as and when necessary
  • Compiling and communicating lessons learned throughout the organisation
  • Ensure that all health and safety processes and procedures are fully understood and worked to across the organisation
  • Identifying areas for development and improvement within the organisation, providing opportunities for upskilling where appropriate
